From the beginning...
I originally went to college for electrical engineering. And although engineering is challenging, I felt there was something missing.
A classmate of mine was heavily into the stock market, making investments and researching different companies that were publicly traded. Our college offered free web space; it just so happened that I didn't need mine as an electrical engineering student, so I didn't know it was available to us, until I saw what this guy was doing with his web space.
He was posting investment strategies for his friends at home to see (sort of like a first generation "blog" without the simplicity of user adminstaration). He was apparently good at making these investments, and wanted to get paid for his valuable reveals, so he charged a subscription fee to view his weekly posts. This really sparked my interest, because the monies that he accumulated over the years, not only paid for books and food each semester, but because of his market and web savvy, he compounded the money into other investments and made exponentially more money. Needless to say, I was going to look into web development a bit more closely.
My roommate for the next year happened to major in Digital Media. Slowly, I became more and more interested in the programs that he was using and eventually changed my major to computer science. It was in this year that I learned that a web site should not only be functional, but esthetic as well. He had a great tallent for integrating design and function.
As I dabbled in a bit of web development and digital media, I still went to school for computer science. I slowly began to see how complicated a web site as a functioning tool, really was. I realized that one had to "program" a web page! There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes of a web site before the user gets to see the finished product. I was a natural.
Out of college, I got a few freelace projects for local businesses, and realized I made the right decision.
